Elements of Natural Radioactive Decay Series In Iranian Mineral Water and Cigarettes

چکیده

The Uranium (U) decay series provides the most important isotopes of elements Radium (Ra), Radon (Rn) and Polonium (Po) with half-lives of 1600 years, 3.8 days and 140 days, respectively. Although the chemical structure of radium is very similar to calcium, the fact that it produces a radioactive gas (Radon) complicates its handling in the laboratory and natural environment. The average concentrations of naturally occurring radio nuclide Ra in drinking water at different parts of Iran were used to estimate the annual effective dose equivalent. In another research, concentrations of Po in Iranian cigarettes were measured for the internal intake of this radionuclide and its concentration in the lung tissues. The results indicate that the average concentration of Ra in drinking water is low compared to 100 mBq/l that is recommended by the World Health Organization while the average concentration of Po and Pb in Iranian cigarette is relatively high in comparison with other cigarettes found in the market.

Elements of natural radioactive decay series in Iranian drinking water and cigarettes.

The uranium (238U) decay series provides the most important isotopes of elements radium (226Ra), radon (222Rn), and polonium (210Po) with half-lives of about 1600 years, 3.8 days, and 140 days, respectively. Although the chemical structure of radium is very similar to calcium, the fact that it produces a radioactive gas (radon) complicates its handling in the laboratory and natural environment....

بررسی توزیع گاز رادون منتشرشده از آبگرم‌های معدنی در فضای بسته و مقایسۀ نتایج تجربی با مقادیر شبیه‌سازی عددی

Radon, a progeny of 238U is formed from the radioactive decay of radium. One of the main sources of radon is the emanation from ground water. Radon gas dissolves in groundwater when it moves from the bed of volcanic rocks which contain radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium and then diffuse into spaces. In closed places, the accumulated radon that decays to radioactive particles can c...

Radioprotective Effects of Sulfur-containing Mineral Water of Ramsar Hot Spring with High Natural Background Radiation on Mouse Bone Marrow Cells

Background: We intend to study the inhibitory effect of sulfur compound in Ramsar hot spring mineral on tumor-genesis ability of high natural background radiation. Objective: The radioprotective effect of sulfur compounds was previously shown on radiation-induced chromosomal aberration, micronuclei in mouse bone marrow cells and human peripheral lymphocyte. Ramsar is known for having the highe...

Optical characteristics and mineral chemistry of colored fluorites from the mines of Mazandaran Province, and causes of their coloration

In order to understand the cause of coloration of fluorites, following experiments (UV-spectroscopy, irradiation by gamma ray and thermal bleaching) carried out on the colored and colorless fluorites from the mines of Mazandaran Province. All colored and colorless fluorites have absorption band in UV part of electromagnetic waves but deep-violet and brown fluorites have an absorption band in vi...

Determination of 226Ra concentration in bottled mineral water and assessment of effective doses, a survey in Turkey

Background: There is a rapid increase worldwide in the consumption of mineral waters which may contain different level of radioactive elements, especially 226Ra, in addition to varying amounts of beneficial salts. Therefore, a comprehensive study was planned and carried out in order to determine concentration of 226Ra natural radionuclide in bottled mineral waters that commercially available in...
